COP 03 / Bill Viola

Bill Viola has his work exhibited in the St Paul's Cathedral.

Martyrs is the first piece created by Viola and Kira Perov. It contains four plasma screens showing four individuals being martyred by the four elements, earth, air, fire and water. The installation lasts for seven minutes but does not have sound.

His work Mary is also installed in the cathedral (shown above)

Analysis:

Bill Viola's work definitely modernises the space of worship, by using plasma screens as the medium to communicate the artwork. Viola's work and the space it is installed in creates a rapport between sacred worship and contemporary artwork in a setting other than a gallery. Some could say his work is quite uncomfortable, especially Martyrs. Is this a demonstration of contemporary religious artwork and the setting of religious locations can work together to form a certain atmosphere?
